It was the end of the year's 90km Criterium Race consisting of some 25 laps in Accra, Ghana on 27th December 2020 at James Town Bukom Boxing Arena. We are proud to announce that one of FC Group's Cycling prodigies Maxwell Doku, sponsored and mentored by Fenton our MD, has taken another Winner's Cup! A much-deserved win and great news for us for the beginning of 2021!
According to Maxwell the race started at 10AM in the morning of 27th December 2020 involving other teams. Only one guy right at the onset was able to push strongly to take the lead. He was from team Guty, thus breaking away. He was not followed by the other cyclists for at least one lap.
That is where Maxwell took the decision to break away with a strong push. One guy tried to follow Maxwell, but he could not stay with him. Maxwell's key target was to catch up with the first breakaway cyclist and managed to catch him so at this point there were two competitors including Maxwell in the lead. They worked hard together to make sure the Peloton did not catch up with them. That was the case until the last lap.
It was at the final stages of the event before the finish of the race, about 600 meters to the finish line, the peloton was catching and the other cyclist with Maxwell started a strong push so Maxwell decided to stay behind him and wait for the right time. Maxwell pushed hard out of the saddle on full gas overtaking the lead cyclist to the finishing line, therefore becoming the winner of the race. Perfect judgement and timing by Maxwell during the last lap of the race.
Maxwell is an avid and enthusiastic cyclist and so Fenton is thrilled about this win. He has taken part in other races including the Africa Connect Cycling Club on 24th December 2020, West Africa King of the Mountain Championship, where he came 6th, as well as the last Cowbell Race in Accra in September 2019, in which Fenton also took part. He has represented Ghana in many regional and international cycling events including the 14th season of 2018 UCI African Tour in Burkina Faso on the 15th September 2018 and Tour de Côte d'Ivoire, which was held on 9th-15 September 2018.
Fenton and the team at FC Group are enormously proud of Maxwell's win! The news comes after a challenging 2020 where we've all learned to continue to push in all our endeavours, despite the tough global business environment we are all facing. Fenton looks forward to cycling with the youth during his next visit and continuing with his mentoring, coaching, and sponsoring Young Cyclists in Accra, Ghana, and other parts of Africa. He will also continue to supply cycling equipment and gear as needed.
Hearing of such victory only reinforces the Group's belief in social investment and involvement in local talent and community work. Please join us in applauding Maxwell for his fantastic win. We look forward to supporting more local initiatives - at the end of 2020 we started distributing durable face masks in schools and local communities in Lagos, Nigeria. We aim to continue with this and other well-deserving causes this year.
Wishing our customers and partners a Happy and Prosperous New Year. We will all push on to win!
