A very well done to Fenton, founder of FC Group’s cycling charity, who took a first in Cat for #TeamFCG in Dubai at the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge on Saturday 19th February and was just 30 secs behind the overall winner.
This event is part of the UCI Gran Fondo World series, and this win takes Fenton to the world finals in Trento, Italy in September.
The 94.8km flat and fast granfondo finished in a 4 men break at the end with British Simon Henley (M35-39) outsprinting his 3 opponents with Edgardo Tunay (PHI - M35-39) and Abdulrahman Salem (UAE - M19-34) finishing in second and third. The four men stayed 25 seconds ahead of a larger 60 riders group with 13 women all sprinting for overall 5th place. Fastest female in that sprint was Egyptian Ebtissam Zayed (F19-34) who beated two Italians on the line with Carmela Cipriani (F19-34) and Aurora Mantovani (F19-34) in second and third. Remarkable was also that these three women all scored an overall top 10 ranking in the race.
Over 2000 cyclists at the 12th edition of UCI Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge, a new great success, rolled through the closed streets of Dubai early Saturday morning, with many trying to earn a starting slot at the 2022 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. The World Championship qualifier covered 94.8 dead-flat kilometers, culminating in a sprint victory for 38 year-old Simon Henley from Great Britain in 2:10:10, while Ebtissam Zayed from Egypt also sprinted to victory a few seconds later in 2:10:37 to win the women’s race. Each rider received a very nice 10,000 AED (8500 euros) 1st place prize.
Held in partnership with Dubai Sports Council, Spinneys and Dubai 92, the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge is one of the Middle East’s premium amateur cycling events, attracting cyclists from all over the world. As a key qualifying race in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series season, riders finishing within the top 20% of of their gender/age category earn a starting slot at the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Trento, Italy on 18 September 2022.
Trento will host the Granfondo World Championships which will take place from 15th to 18th September 2022, with three races scheduled: time trial individual, team relay and Grandfondo. This event was previously hosted by Trentino in 2013 and participants are selected by UCI according to qualification tests (World Series) regulated by UCI itself.
Fenton is pleased to have taken part and qualified and said, "months of specific interval training for this race certainly paid off.” It was also great for Fenton to meet up with some other Ghana cyclists who came to the event.
