FC Group Establishes Phone Card and MoMo Business for One of Its Cycling Prodigies

Since Fenton Curley, MD of FC Group, took on the mentorship of two of Ghana’s young and talented cyclists in 2017, he has not only imparted skills, knowledge, and training on being effective cyclists. He has also mentored them on general wellbeing, life skills whilst providing essential cycling gear and kit as required.

That is why during his recent trip to Accra, FC Group has decided to set up, upgrade and make more independent Clementina Ayoung, one of Ghana's Top Women Cycling Champions currently sponsored by FC Group, by providing her with business capital.

Clementina used to work for someone else but now owns her own business thanks to FC Group. It took Clementina six months to acquire a friendly container and kiosk and rent the site and during this trip Fenton decided to take a three-year commitment, with one-year advance payment for the site as well as capital to stock and set-up ready for business!

Located at Paa William in Accra, near a busy market location, Fenton believes this business selling MTN, Airtel, Tigo and Glo Top-Up Phone Cards along with providing Mobile Money (MoMo) transfers, selling phone accessories and refreshments is bound to be successful. There is some competition, with another Kiosk just up the road, but Clementina understands it is all about building good relationships for repeat business and having stock of all the networks which is key for investment.

Clementina has decorated the container herself with power lights and a ceiling fan. Her consistent passion for cycling means she goes for training every morning before opening shop at 08.30am and closing at 9.30pm, 7 days a week. Saturdays and Sundays are her busiest days.

Fenton is of a firm belief that once a person is set up with a means of generating their own income it ensures they are economically empowered to provide for their needs and that of their dependents. Therefore, Clementina reports on sales daily and is set up with a plan to track sales and expense against the business plan in order to be able make payments towards her interest free capital loan from FC Group until fully paid off.

In Ghana, mobile money has opened access to financial independence for many young people. The MTN MoMo for example has created over 132,000 jobs through its agencies across the country since its inception. From this service people can transfer money from bank accounts or internationally to MoMo Wallets which are used to pay school fees, electricity, buy treasury bills etc.

FC Group is proud to have been able to set Clementina up with this initiative during Fenton's recent trip to Accra and look forward to it coming to fruition for all. Our quest is to continue with local support thus building our corporate social responsibility in all strategic African countries that we represent Kodak, Miraclon, Glunz & Jensen and other partners. We look forward to more new and exciting initiatives.
